John Whitlock epitomizes BLDD’s Core Values of passion and fun. It is this zest for life that John brings to his position as BLDD’s Director of the Higher Education Design Group. John also has a passion for fitness and athletic facilities, along with an expertise in the design of secure and safe educational environments.
When John isn’t developing 21st century learning environments, he is busy practicing what he preaches … reading a good book, watching his kids play a plethora of sports, water skiing, or playing guitar.
We asked John (aka Shannon) some fun questions:

What purchase(s) of less than $100 have most improved your life?
A lap desk. Now when I work on my laptop, I no longer find myself sweating profusely!
What would you put on a billboard?
DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON FACEBOOK!
Seriously, people…use some common sense and fact check.
What is your favorite book or author?
As a young person my favorite book was The Hobbit. As an adult, I can’t pick just one: Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, and Marry Shelly’s Frankenstein.
What is your favorite place or built environment?
I had the great fortune to visit Italy recently. During my time there, my favorite built environment changed daily. But, if I had to pick one, the Pantheon in Rome blew me away! The fact that the building is almost 2,000 years old is absolutely amazing!
If you could do anything without worrying about getting paid you would be a…
an island beach bum who plays guitar and sings at the local bars. The kind of place where shoes are optional.
What is your favorite song, album, or musician?
This may be cheating, but I’ll say the BLDD band, The Veggies. Having the opportunity to make music with friends…and thousands of adoring fans, is something for which I will always be grateful!
What is something very few people know about you?
That I really enjoy musicals. My favorite musical changed recently to Wicked and I finally got the chance to see Hamilton (which was awesome). All you have to do is ask and I’ll sing you a show tune. Can you guess this one? I would wile away the hours, conferring with the flowers, if I only had a brain (well that was kinda an easy one).
Thanks, John!
On a serious note, John is someone to be counted on, a leader at the office, a partner that will bring levity to any situation, and someone you’d like to have an adult cocktail with after a long work week. We can’t imagine the office without the effortless humor and fun that John brings, and we love having him as part of the BLDD family.
