John Maynerich (better known as Mayo around the office) has been a member of the BLDD family for over 15 years.
John realized his love for architecture as a kid, creating buildings from Legos and Lincoln Logs or any other miscellaneous item around the house that would satisfy his imagination of the built environment. Today, John’s clients cite his attention to detail and perfectionism as a few of the many reasons they love working with him.
John came from a large and loving Catholic family that instilled a great sense of faith and loyalty in him. He and his wife Margo have started a large family of their own with four, now five children. He enjoys sharing his love of art, architecture and design with them.
John also enjoys putting his graphic design skills to the test designing bottle labels for his family’s winery, traveling, sports, and just appreciating the finer things in life, whether that’s food, drink, art or industry.
We asked John some fun questions:
What purchase(s) of less than $100 have most improved your life?
I finally abandoned my fat Costanza wallet a few years ago and went with a slim metal card case that only holds 3 things (ID, Debit Card, and 1 random card). My back and pants have thanked me tenfold.
What new belief, behaviors, or habits, adopted within the last 5 years, have most positively impacted your life?
I’ve tried to get exercise via walking the dog and/or baby daily. I used to be a big runner but walking gives me that alone, thinking time with a little less stress on my body.
What has been your favorite age and why?
Definitely my early 20s… Had a great time hanging out with friends at the University of Illinois in between all-nighters. I really enjoyed my early days at BLDD as well before the kiddos starting coming. 🙂
What is your favorite song, album, or musician?
I consider myself a fan of all music. My formative years were in the early 90s, so I grew up loving Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Weezer. Weezer is still one of my favorite bands. Recently, I’ve been playing Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats.
What is your favorite place or built environment?
Anywhere near the water. I love the outdoors, especially fishing and hiking. I’ve only been to the ocean a handful of times, but would love to spend my retirement near the beach.
If you could do anything without worrying about getting paid you would be a…
Professional fisherman – I’d eat what I catch and stay on the water all day.
I idolize Bear Grylls. He’s had several Man v. Wild type shows over the years. I’ve probably seen every episode and I have his book. One day I’m going to have to survive in the wild (either by accident or to “go off the grid”) and I’ll be just fine. (This is my wife, Margo, rolling her eyes).
That last answer might explain a few things…just kidding. Thanks John!
John’s good nature is easily shared in the office. His experience inventing games with his six siblings has helped him create the Office Olympic Games and various contests – all in the effort to promote laughter and camaraderie.
